Pam Dukes was the most decorated state champion in school history and the only Patriots athlete to represent the United States at the Olympics. He also coached a number of all-state and professional players. Goldwater was named the state Coach of the Year by The Star-Ledger. That 1986 team, led by Dan Donovan and Mike Dermer, went 23-4 and won the A North Division and Central Jersey titles. His teams won six Central Jersey and six Shore Conference Division titles, a Shore Conference Tournament crown, and reached the pinnacle in 1986 with the Group III state championship. During his career, which included a stay at Howell High School before coming to Freehold Township when it opened up in 1972, Goldwater’s teams were 331-190, making him one of the winningest coaches in Shore Conference history. Goldwater, who was the athletic director as well as the head baseball coach at Freehold Township, brought the school statewide recognition through the exploits of the teams he coached. The five-member hall of fame class of 2003 - baseball coach Bernie Goldwater, track stars Pam Dukes and Jordan Gray, the late baseball star Steve Smith, and 1,000-point career scorer Jeff Peras - are the ones who created the school’s tradition of athletic success through their many accomplishments. Freehold Township High School turned to its heavyweights for its inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class.
